Frequently Asked Questions

People we meet ask us numerous questions about Red Dog Ranch...How, Why, When, etc. Here I've compiled the most common questions asked. If you've got a question about the ranch, farming, or how we do something, please feel free to ask. [contact us]

Why Heirloom & what does it mean?

Taste!  Have you ever wondered why the vegetables in the supermarket taste so bland?  Produce in the supermarket is grown using hybrid plants optimized for simultaneous ripening, uniformity and long-distance shipping on tractor trailers.  Taste and nutrition are of secondary importance.

By contrast, heirloom vegetable varieties have been treasured and handed down across generations of gardeners, sometime for hundreds of years, because of their superior taste and other unique characteristics.  Heirloom vegetables are suitable for home gardening and direct-to-consumer sale, but often aren't suitable for shipping in tractor-trailers cross-country.  So you'll never find them at the grocery store!

How do we get our Seeds?

We save seeds from selected fruits from the previous growing season. With plants that might cross-pollinate, we order seeds from suppliers that specialize in Heirloom Seeds. [see our 'links' page]

Can I visit Red Dog Ranch?

To be honest, we don't have the time, staff, or insurance to accept visitors.
